Mexican Hairless (Xoloitzcuintle) Club UK - Fun Day

by Ashley Savage

On the 29 August 2011, Bank Holiday Monday, eager to escape the chaos of the Notting Hill Carnival we set out from London for Nottinghamshire to attend the first ever Xolo Fun Day to take place in the UK. This event was organised by Donna Cawley, whose IMA Xolos are renowned for their beauty, temperament and intelligence.

For some considerable time it had been Donna’s dream to hold a show for this lovely breed. She felt it important that any interested members of the public, and breed enthusiasts alike, have the opportunity to see and compare several examples of the dogs in all of their sizes, (miniature, intermediate and standard) these including both coated and hairless varieties.

Therefore in 2010 the breed club started discussions to plan an event and Yew Tree Canine, where Donna and Gina attend ringcraft classes, kindly agreed to allow them to hold a Xolo Fun Day alongside their annual Fun Dog Show. This dream become reality at The Griffins Head, Papplewick, Nottinghamshire when a total of 18 Mexican Hairless got together, this being the greatest number of Xolos ever to be in one place at one time in the UK!

With 12 breed classes, judged by Mr Tan Nagrecha, there was plenty to see throughout the day. Rosettes were awarded to 5th place and the breed club had merchandise available to buy on their stand, ranging from coasters to car stickers.  As well as the Xolos a variety of other breeds were exhibited elsewhere in the showground, which added to the excitement and atmosphere of the day.

As there are currently so few Xolos in the UK, it was lovely to see the two new standard imports, a male from Mexico and a female from Russia, both of which had only arrived here a month before the show. These two beautiful dogs will undoubtedly help in increasing the gene pool here and should thus help to strengthen the establishment of the breed in England when they eventually enter into the breeding programme.

On the day it was also exciting to see several of the six month old standard pups bred by Donna earlier in the year from her stunning top winning bitch, Diva, sired by Georgina Rymer’s lovely dog, Mango. These pups appeared to be pretty consistent in terms of type and temperament and all have apparently settled well into their new homes giving much pleasure to their respective families.

As a breed the Xoloitzcuintle can only officially be exhibited in Import Register classes, which are unfortunately few and far between, so the Fun Day was an ideal way of helping to raise the profile of this fascinating and rare breed.

Many thanks to Donna for organising this event and for inviting me to come along and photograph on the day. Thanks also to Donna’s husband, PJ and to Gina and all of the others who helped in making the first ever Fun Day such a resounding success. Hopefully this will be the first of many such events.
