Why does my puppy eat his poo (faeces)?

There could be a number of reasons for this behaviour, it might be natural puppy curiosity in the same way the toddlers have a fascination for faeces, it may be a habit that developed in the kennel particularly if the puppy quarters were not kept clean or it could be a dietary deficiency. If your puppy is being fed a suitable diet and yet he appears to lose weight, has loose stools or a produces a large quantity of faecal waste, it would be advisable to seek veterinary advice. If your puppy appears to be thriving and there is no evidence of poor digestion, make sure you always clear up any faeces immediately from his playing area, prevent him from sniffing or investigating his own faeces and don’t allow him to smell other dog’s stools when walking on his lead. Providing the vet has given him a clean bill of health and you are fastidious about cleanliness, he should eventually grow out of this habit.
