West London includes most of the Royal Parks including Kensington Park Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park and St James. It is possible to walk from Notting Hill Gate or Kensington right into the heart of the West End via the Royal Parks and hardly touching a main road! En route, one can see many of London’s most famous tourist attractions such as Kensington Palace, the Albert Hall, the Peter Pan statue, Princess Diana’s fountain, the Serpentine, the Animals at War monument and at the other side of Hyde Park, you can walk along Green Park to Buckingham Palace. On the skyline you can clearly see the London Eye and Big Ben. There are also some lovely parks and places to walk in the surrounding areas such as Chiswick House where a dog show is held annually in September.
Queen Victoria was known to have a great love of dogs and it is said that when she opened Kensington Gardens to the public it was for the benefit of dogs and children. By the lodge where a road crosses between Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, near Lancaster Gate is the famous Victorian dog cemetery. Unfortunately one has to peer through the railings to see it, as it is not open to the public, but it is possible to see many of the 200 little tombstones commemorating mostly dogs but also few cats, birds and even a monkey.
