West CalderTAKE A CHANCE ON ME Dogs Trust West Calder long-term resident provides inspiration for a charity single ![]() This time last year Dogs Trust West Calder were desperately searching for a home for one of their longest term residents 10 year old crossbreed Chance. He had been at the rehoming centre for over seven years as he does not trust people easily so needed a home with very experienced owners and staff feared he may never find the loving home he deserved. Fortunately Chance’s luck changed when budding singer Kim Adam crossed his path for the second time a year ago and not only has he found his forever home but he has become the inspiration for a new charity single. Kim had first met Chance in 2004 when she worked at Dogs Trust West Calder and was so surprised and upset when she returned in 2011 that such a wonderful dog had still not found a home that she agreed to adopt him. Chance and Kim soon became inseparable and she has released a single about his journey - “My Chance” which she has dedicated to him. Kim has auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent getting through to the live audition and practiced by singing to Chance and her other animals at Fuefield Farm. Kim Adam, who runs Fuefield Farm which teaches children how to care for animals, explains: “Chance did not have the best start in life and was a very nervous dog but his confidence is building every day. With this special dog by my side my singing career has really taken off. I have a concert planned in May with Moira Kerr, “My Chance” is flying off the shelves and even Susan Boyle has been in touch. Chance is such an inspiration to me, not only through his constant companionship and support but because despite all he has been through he never gave up on finding his happy ending. I am so grateful that because Dogs Trust never put a healthy dog down I was able to find him” Susan Tonner, Dogs Trust West Calder Rehoming Centre Manager, said: “We are delighted that Chance has finally found his perfect home– it just shows that no matter how long it takes there is a home out there for every dog! He was at the centre for so long that all the staff got to know him really well, he is such a gorgeous dog and though we do really miss him we know that he is very much loved in his new home.” If you would like to offer a dog a home please contact Dogs Trust West Calder at Bentyhead, West Calder EH55 8LE or on 01506 873 459. HOMELESS HOUND IS CHASING HIS “FURRY TAIL” ENDING Dogs Trust West Calder rehoming appeal ![]() Staff at Dogs Trust West Calder has launched an urgent appeal to find a home for a very special four legged resident. Jovi, a gorgeous three year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, hasn’t settled in to kennel life and can’t stop chasing his tail. His tail is now continually bandaged when he is left unsupervised to stop him damaging it. Susan Tonner, Dogs Trust West Calder Centre Manager, explains: “Jovi is a sweet, affectionate softie who adores human company and cannot get enough cuddles! He is a sensitive boy and we think his habit developed because he loves to be with people so much that he gets bored and stressed when left alone. He would love nothing better than a new home where he can enjoy plenty of long walks and curling up on the sofa with a new best friend. He is looking for a quiet, adult home where he can enjoy unlimited tummy rubs from a new owner who has time to help him settle in and give him all the love he deserves.” If you offer can Jovi a happy end to his ‘tail’ home please contact Dogs Trust West Calder at Bentyhead, West Calder EH55 8LE or on 01506 873 459. STICKY DOGS STUCK IN KENNELS Dogs Trust West Calder appeals on behalf of its overlooked dogs A quarter of the dogs currently at Dogs Trust West Calder are classed as ‘sticky’, meaning they have been stuck in kennels for six months or more waiting to find a new home. Dogs can become sticky for a variety of reasons including: medical issues requiring treatment, age, socialisation or behaviour issues requiring treatment or just simply being overlooked by visitors. The rehoming centre is making a special appeal on behalf of two of its stickies, Harvey & Buddy to see if they can be ‘unstuck’! ![]() Harvey Handsome Harvey is a five year old Boxer cross. He is a very friendly dog who adores people and can’t get enough attention. He is a big softie who enjoys his comfort, so would love a comfy bed and a pillow to rest his head on. This soppy boy is best suited to a family with older children as he is a strong and bouncy dog. Harvey is a fun lad who loves to play and really enjoys a trip in the car. He is an active dog, who is always happy to go for walkies and would love to be part of a family of his own. ![]() Buddy Buddy is a gorgeous six year old Collie. Buddy is a sweet boy who loves meeting new people, especially people who will make a fuss of him and tickle his tummy. A typical collie, he is very bright and full of energy. This sweet pooch loves nothing better than running in fields and playing fetch. Buddy would suit an adult only home with owners who are familiar with this energetic breed and do not have any other pets. An owner lucky enough to take Buddy home will be showered with love and affection and greeted with a wagging tail and a cheeky smile. Susan Tonner Dogs Trust West Calder Rehoming Centre manager, said: “Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder there are some dogs we know will ‘fly out’ of our rehoming centres. Those dogs that fit people’s idea of what a rescue dog should look like – a scruffy, medium sized crossbreed with a cheeky look will always find a home quickly. Dogs with missing legs are popular as people feel they are helping to ‘rescue’ a dog and puppies are always a firm favourite! Harvey and Buddy require quite specific homes with owners who will help them understand what it’s like to be part of the family again. These dogs both require calm experienced owners who are familiar with their breed and will be able to help them settle into the loving homes they deserve after spending so long in kennels.” If you are interested in rehoming Buddy, Harvey or any other dog at Dogs Trust West Calder , please visit Dogs Trust West Calder at Bentyhead, West Calder EH55 8LE or call 01506 873 459. Dogs Trust West Calder golden oldies talk a success ![]() Dogs Trust West Calder is hunting for loving homes for some very special Old Age Pooches. Fans of older dogs were in for a real treat this weekend as Pamela Jackson the rehoming centre’s Assistant Manger gave a talk about the benefits of owning a pensioner pooch and advice on how to care for them. The talk was attended by over 30 people and raised an impressive £200 for Dogs Trust. One lucky older dog even found a home after a member of the public fell in love with him. German Shepherd cross Major will enjoy his golden years in a loving home of his own.” Dogs Trust West Calder Rehoming Centre Manager, Susan Tonner, comments; “We are very grateful for the generosity shown by the oldies enthusiasts who attended the talk. Not only did we raise over £200 to help us carry out our valuable work but we also have had lots of offers of new home for our older dogs A number of people have asked to be contacted when an older dog comes into the centre. Susan adds: “Older dogs are extremely rewarding pets. Unlike a puppy, many are likely to have been house trained and socialised already and they will probably know a few commands such as sit or stay. They are also often housetrained and may be happy home alone for a few hours. Do come along to the centre and meet our dogs”.” Dogs Trust West Calder cares for around 60 dogs at the Rehoming Centre at any one time. Some older dogs or those with medical conditions will be rehomed on the Dogs Trust Foster Scheme whereby some or all of their medical costs will be paid for by the charity, please ask for details. If you are interested in rehoming a dog please contact Dogs Trust West Calder on 01506 873 459 or visit at Bentyhead, West Calder EH55 8LE. The talk will be at 2pm in the training barn at West Calder Rehoming Centre. It is free to attend, although donations will be welcome. The talk will also involve an opportunity to meet Kyle, Molly and Buddy - three beautiful Collies looking for loving homes. Susan Tonner, Dogs Trust West Calder Centre Manager, says: “We hope to give the public a chance to learn more about this terrific breed and enjoy our parade of Collies looking for homes. The gorgeous dogs greeting guests will include two year old Border Collie Kyle. This affectionate lad loves a cuddle and is happy to be rehomed with other dogs.” Susan adds: “Kyle can be quite nervous so needs a calm, quiet adult home with confident owners who are at home for most of the day and have experience of Collies. He loves play time including chasing bubbles and playing with his toys. Kyle is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped and comes with insurance and free behavioural advice. Given half a chance in a loving home Kyle will reward his lucky owner with years of love and companionship.” If you can offer clever Kyle a home please contact Dogs Trust West Calder at Bentyhead, West Calder EH55 8LE or on 01506 873 459. INTRODUCING THE ‘DOGWALK’ AT DOGS TRUST WEST CALDER On Saturday 24th September the reception area at Dogs Trust West Calder rehoming centre will be transformed with the addition of a red carpet. 30 of the centre dogs will take it in turns to strut their stuff around the reception to the applause of the watching members of the public. Arranged by Centre Manager Susan Tonner the event is a first for the rehoming centre and will showcase the diverse range of dogs looking for new homes. From little Jake the Jack Russell to Will the Lurcher all will be getting themselves ready for their five minutes of fame. Whether walking to heel, showing off a newly learnt trick or just being generally adorable, 30 of the dogs at the centre will make a debut on the red ‘dogwalk.’ Says Susan: “The staff and I wanted to create a different way for people to see the dogs and we thought the ‘dogwalk’ would give them the chance to show off their personality a bit more. With three outings during the afternoon of the 24th September the dogs will hopefully impress and we could see the start of some beautiful friendships.” The dogs will take three turns of the ‘dogwalk’ and special accolades for the oldest and springiest dogs will be handed out along with special rosettes for other hotly contested categories including best legs! Judged by the staff, with a bit of help from the audience the centre is set to be abuzz with excitement, but without any of the diva moments! If you would like to visit the centre and witness the ‘pawfectly’ coordinated moments of stardom from Dogs Trust West Calder’s four legged friends pop in at either 1pm, 2pm or 3pm. If you would like to find out more about any of the dogs at Dogs Trust West Calder please contact them on 01506 873 459 or visit at Bentyhead, West Calder EH55 8LE or www.dogstrust.org.uk. |
