Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966
It is an criminal offence for any person to perform an act of veterinary surgery on an animal, including the diagnosis of disease or injury, that is not registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a qualified vet.
Qualified and listed veterinary nurses are allowed to perform medical treatment or minor surgery under the direction of a qualified veterinary surgeon as long as the treatment does not require entry into the body cavity.
There are a few other exemptions that include the carrying out of first aid to relieve pain or to save a life.
