Rescue Me - Melissa Wareham (2009) Book
-My Life with the Battersea Dogs Ebury Press, 2009

Having failed her biology O’level, privately educated, Melissa Wareham, leaves school to join the staff at Battersea Dogs Home. She begins as the lowliest of kennel maids and over fifteen years works her way through promotion to becoming the rehoming manager and the face representing Battersea on the TV. This book could have easily given way to Disneyworld sentimentality and gratuitous naming of celebrities but while there are tear-jerking moments and a few famous names, these moments are never laboured and are always relevant. Melissa’s simple but engaging style makes easy and absorbing reading for anyone interested in dogs. She is also brutally honest about the more unpleasant side of her duties and, for this reason the book should be recommended as essential reading for any young teenager contemplating working with animals.
