Pets In Need - Marc Abraham (Children's Book)

Review by Andi Godfrey
On Christmas Day I curled up on the sofa and prepared to unwrap the pages of Pets in Need, a new book by Marc Abraham aimed at children aged 9+.
A children’s book can be challenging to an adult but I found Pets in Need as compelling and easy to read as most adults find the books of JK Rowling or Roald Dahl. Each chapter is a complete story within itself and therefore makes perfect bedtime reading.
Any child that has an ambition to go into veterinary work, either as a vet or a vet nurse, will gain a true insight into the profession. Marc never ‘talks down’ to his readers and he introduces a sufficient amount of veterinary jargon to educate rather than to confound. The harsher realities of his work are handled with sensitivity and are far outweighed by the reward and satisfaction of restoring an animal back to good health and consequent joy of a grateful owner.
There is a veritable ‘ark’ of animals covered in his book ranging from dogs, cats, budgies, gerbils and wildlife. Marc cleverly interweaves topics such as the recognition of sickness in pets, the importance of a correct diet and how to avoid accidents in the home throughout each chapter, and in so doing, subtly educates his readers on responsible pet ownership without ever appearing to lecture.
Marc is clearly proud of his profession but also he shows great humility in owning up to his mistakes. He has a genuine gift for humour but at the same time takes his work extremely seriously. Not only does he show great compassion towards his patients but also towards his clients who clearly hold him in high esteem.
As this review began, so Marc’s book draws to a close on Christmas Day, bringing with it as much warmth as a Yule log. I will not spoil the enjoyment of this book by revealing anymore of the content but I will recommend it to all parents. It is an ideal gift for a youngster who has ambitions to join the veterinary profession or for one who is simply interested in and enjoys animals.
‘Pets In Need’ by Marc Abraham is published in paperback on February 2nd 2012 by Red Fox priced at £5.99.
