Pet Travel - Why can't UK residents enjoy the same facilities as our European neighbours?
I am fortunate enough to own an apartment in Tenerife and as pensioner spend as much time as possible in a warmer climate. Under no circumstances would I breach UK law regarding compliance with Pets Passports etc. I can travel on average for about £100 RETURN but if I wan’t to take my dog on any airline the cost is between £500-£700 each way.Our European neighbours regularly fly with their dogs and only pay excess baggage at a cost of 50 EUROS,below 7kg the dog is allowed in the cabin ,over 7kg the dog must be in an approved portable container which I find totally acceptable. It is a four hour flight to Tenerife or a four day journey at least using two ferry crossings .Our European neighbours comply with the law and I regularly meet Belgium.Dutch, and German people who travel on a regular basis.I would like to know if anyone can help or advise as i don,t want to use kennels or drive overland very long distances which would also involve two ferry crossings. Many Thanks I look forward to any responses.
Peter Whyberd Posted 4th July 2011 Only certain European Airlines will allow pets to travel in the cabin for little cost. Unfortunately this does not apply when flying to or from the UK for reasons unknown (sorry). However if Peter and Marjorie are able to fly with either Air France or Iberia from an airport in mainland Europe this will apply. They could look at flying to Tenerife and from Paris for example. I am not sure how this would work out for them logistically as they still have to get to and from Paris of course and pets are not allowed on Eurostar but they could look into this as an option. Unfortunately we cover mainland Spain only. Sorry that I could not be of more help. Kind regards

Thank you very much for the responses regarding pets travelling within the EU.I am simply hoping to stimulate interest and even perhaps a forum of people with similar feelings which may lead to residents living in the UK enjoying the same airline facilities as our European neighbours. It seems to me that all airlines have made a decision not to follow EU mainland policy. Many Thanks for your interest.
