My dogs got diarrhoea. What should I do?
Diarrhoea in puppies is always serious and you should get veterinary advice immediately.
There are many causes on diarrhoea in adult dogs but a dietary one is the most common. If your dog remains bright in himself and still has an appetite, then the symptoms will often disappear within 24 hours. Treat by gradually introducing a bland diet of chicken or fish and rice or pasta. These days some vets believe that you should continue feeding a dog the diet that he is used to but rich and fatty foods and treats are out of the question. Some people swear by Weetabix soaked in water or mashed potato to help firm the stool!
Dogs with diarrhoea should be encouraged to drink water little and often, but if vomiting starts remove the water and replace it with a bowl containing an ice cube. Drinking thirstily will exacerbate the condition.
Should the diarrhoea continue longer than 24 hours, the dog becomes very poorly, the dog starts vomiting or there is blood in the faeces then veterinary advice must be sought.
