Le Touquet - The Red Fox Hotel

 

If you fancy a little ‘je ne sais quoi’ then take a trip over to Le Touquet.  This French resort can be reached from the centre of London in less than 4 hours via the Euro Tunnel (but don’t forget that you will lose an hour on the way out, as France is one hour ahead of us).

This is London Dog Forum’s favourite short break.  Easy to reach but something completely different and a chance to sup the French wine, sample the French patisserie and soak in the Gallic atmosphere. 
At the turn of the 20th century, Le Touquet was nothing more than sandy moorland full of wildlife but soon after WW1 it had become one of France’s chicest resorts, a playground to the rich and famous, boasting a grand casino, luxurious hotels and a vast sandy beach.  Many visitors arrived at the airport in their private planes, which is still popular today with flying clubs and private pilots from all sectors.  Le Touquet retains a strong Art Deco influence and it is easy to imagine the decadence of the 1920’s as one drives in through the forest peppered with stylish villas, then past the vast casino and the ultra grand Westminster Hotel and into the smart and spotlessly clean town filled with restaurants and boutiques. 

London Dog Forum highly recommends the Red Fox Hotel where the friendly and helpful staff will give you a warm greeting.  This hotel is conveniently situated with boutiques, restaurants and a cinema on the doorstep.  It is five minute’s walk from the sea front where you can take a bracing walk along the promenade or roam with your dog/or dogs in the small pine forest by the dunes.  The well-serviced rooms are spacious and comfortable with modern en suite bathrooms, colour TV with English channels included, free wifi, heating and air conditioning.  There is also a breakfast room within the hotel.  Parking is difficult in the town but for a few extra Euros a day, the hotel provides parking in an underground car park where you can guarantee that your car will be totally safe. 

 

There is plenty of opportunity for the sports enthusiast here as Le Touquet boasts two excellent golf courses, tennis courts, riding, sand sailing and sailing. However, if you prefer a more relaxed approach you can take a lunchtime picnic and visit nearby places such as the historic walled town of Montreuil-sur-Mer with its ancient ramparts that inspired Victor Hugo to write his famous novel ‘Les Miserables’.  It would take a small guidebook to include all the interesting places around and about but with the help of a map you will never be short of a new adventure. 

We do not pretend that this is a cheap weekend overall, mainly due to the present exchange rate, but the hotel is very reasonably priced and we guarantee that your dogs will enjoy their stay and will be warmly welcomed.
