The first Advice and Adoption Area located in Pets at Home Barnstaple, showcasing dogs in need of homes from the nearby Dogs Trust Ilfracombe rehoming centre, has rehomed an impressive 20 rescue dogs since starting up in August 2011. The lucky dogs range from Collies to lurchers and even a very cute Scotty called Maddie.

Anyone wishing to rehome a rescue dog that they meet in the Advice and Adoption Area will be asked to visit Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre to register their interest. No dogs will be rehomed from the Dogs Trust Advice and Adoption Area within Pets at Home. Dogs Trust staff based in-store also offer advice and information on rehoming.

Pam Stow, Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre Manager says:

“We are absolutely thrilled that 20 of our wonderful residents have managed to capture hearts and find themselves a new home through the Advice and Adoption centres at Pets at Home. These are dogs that may have been overlooked if they had been kept in a kennel environment so we are delighted that this initiative is paying off. People aren’t always aware of the responsibilities involved when considering a dog and Pets at Home has a huge customer base, so to be given the opportunity to reach that many people is just brilliant for rescue dogs.”

BRAMBLE AND TESS ARE HOPING FOR A VERY YAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

Dogs Trust IIfracombe Valentine’s appeal

Staff at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe are hoping this Valentine’s Day will bring a lifelong home for two special dogs in need of a loving new family. Potential owners are welcome to visit the centre in search of their perfect pooch and meet hounds looking for love.

Best Buddies Bramble and Tess came to Dogs Trust Ilfracombe when their owners emigrated to Australia and couldn’t take them. They are hoping that a visitor to the centre will fall in love with them both and give them a home together. Tess is a gorgeous 12 year old tri colour Collie cross and Bramble is a lovely 12 year old black and white Collie cross. Both dogs adore people but there is only one thing they both hate, and that’s being apart from each other!

Claire Joselin, Supporter Relations Officer at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, says “It’s always a little harder to find pairs of dogs new homes but it would be difficult not to fall in love with this adorable pair. They are very sociable and friendly and would be a wonderful addition to any family. They could live with other dogs and with older children. They are both very clever Collies and would love to meet a new owner who will keep them entertained.”

Claire adds: “They are both looking for a retirement home with owners who will not leave them for too long. Despite their age they are both still active and love to go for walks and would love a big garden to run around in. We are hoping that someone will have room in their home and heart this Valentine’s Day to give these fantastic dogs the love they deserve.”

Dogs Trust Ilfracombe has been rescuing North Devon’s unwanted dogs since 1975 and is now set to welcome builders as well as canines as the centre undergoes 12 months of building work from today 30 January 2011.

The centre’s out-of-date kennels and public facilities will be rebuilt and existing structures will be refurbished and improved with sustainability in mind.

Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Manager, Pam Stow, comments:

“We are delighted that the centre is being rebuilt as it will mean such a difference to          the dogs, staff and visitors. We may be a little untidy for a while, but the rehoming        centre will continue to welcome visitors wanting to rehome        dogs and will be rebuilt in        phases to ensure minimal disruption. So, please do continue to come along and        support us.”

At present, the Rehoming Centre has 46 kennels, 20 of which are in two out-dated ‘line’ blocks and 22 are in two parasol blocks, which were built between 1989 and 1996. All were constructed under very different budgetary constraints and without the knowledge of animal behaviour, and proven stress-reduction design which now exist.

Dogs Trust Property Director, Matt Taylor, explains:

“The last 10 years of research, design development and advances in behavioural knowledge have resulted in significant changes and      improvements to the design and        construction of Dogs Trust Rehoming Centres across the UK. The driving force        behind the design improvements is the desire to constantly improve the environment    for the dogs in our care. Happier dogs results in them being easier to handle and   ultimately to re-home. As we have a non destruction policy, this is a priority for us. ”

Dogs Trust is committed to reducing its “carbon pawprint” and endeavour to use renewable energy resources where possible. Plans include:

-          Photovoltaic panels on roofs

-          High level insulation

-          Underfloor heating in kennels

-          Glass fronted, angled rehoming kennels

-          Best use of natural daylight

-          Reuse of existing developed land and buildings

Anyone wanting to rehomed a dog should visit the rehoming centre at Hazledene, West Down, Ilfracombe, North Devon, EX34 8NU or call 01271 812 709
