My puppy doesn't respond to treats. What should I do?

You have my sympathy. It is so much easier to train using food treats! My first question is:
When are you training your puppy? It is always easier to train a puppy when he is a bit hungry. Not too hungry though, otherwise he won’t be able to concentrate.
Are you using a treat that is really smelly and appetising? There are some good ones specifically for training that you can buy from most pet shops and vets, or you could try using cheese, baked liver or sausage. Remember that palatable treats are usually very calorific and rich and you only need very small morsels for reward. If your puppy still shows no interest in food treats then you can try using a toy and a game as reward, but try and reserve one especially for training and take it away straight after the session (not always easily done!). Finally, there is no greater reward then fuss and praise from the owner and this should always be applied in huge quantities throughout your dog’s life.
