How should I handle my dog during a procedure at the vets?

At the BVSA Congress, Animal Behaviourist, Kendal Shepherd offered this advice.  Owners should be aware that they are present simply to inform the vet of the symptoms and behaviour of their pet and are not required to restrain it.  A dog can be handled as much as the owner wishes before a procedure, but during it, they should have as little contact as possible.  This will ensure that the dog does not associate handling at the vets as a precursor to something unpleasant happening to it.  Following a procedure, the owner should allow the dog to settle before petting it or showing affection.  To show signs of sympathy before it has settled may reinforce fear or aggression in a dog.
