How long can I leave my puppy alone?

Teaching your puppy to stay on his own takes time and should be introduced gradually.  It is best to start this training when he is tired after a meal or after a bout of exercise.  Start by putting him in a playpen or a safe enclosed space making sure that there is nothing that he can destroy or anything on which he can hurt himself. Give him a treat and leave him with a favourite toy.  A special toy filled with treats that are hard to release will amuse him for ages.  Start by leaving the room for a few minutes and then gradually increase the time span.  Once he has become accustomed to this exercise try going out for a short time.  Personally I would try to avoid leaving a young puppy alone longer than 2 or 3 hours until he is a few months older.
