How do I know if my dog is sick?

vet1.jpg

Unlike humans, dogs do not generally make a song and dance when they are feeling ill but they will show changes of behaviour when feeling unwell.

Sick animals tend to want to keep apart from other animals and humans and will take themselves off to a quiet secluded corner.
They may appear depressed or show a change of temperament, perhaps by becoming unusually aggressive or unwilling to be touched.

A sick dog may have little or no appetite and be unwilling to exercise.  He may appear restless and pace up and down or sleep more than usual

Other symptoms that a dog is not well may include a dull coat and a glazed look to the eyes.

When in pain, a dog may appear hunched or crouching and will be protective over the area that is causing the problem. Often a dog will self-mutilate by biting and licking and scratching an particular area of their body excessively.  This is called a displacement activity and the area being mutilated is usually the site of the problem.

If you are in any doubt and are concerned about your dog’s well being or his general demeanour always ring your veterinary surgery and describe the symptoms carefully.  There will always be someone who can advise you whether it is necessary to see a vet.
