How do I know if my bitch is in labour?

Changes of behaviour may be observed in the bitch prior to whelping. She may go off her food and some bitches may start to nest.
You may notice changes in the vulva as it becomes larger and softer. Occasionally you might see a clear vaginal discharge or a water bag. This is like a large teardrop about 2 to 3 inches in size coming from the vulva.
The bitch’s temperature drops by a few degrees 6 – 18 hours before giving birth and she will develop a ‘pear-shaped’ abdomen with a hollow flank as the ligaments relax.
Of course, some bitches can take you completely by surprise by showing no symptoms at all, so it is as well to be prepared in advance!
Pups are generally born at 20 minute intervals.
