How can I stop my puppy from jumping up at people?

puppyjumping350.jpg

When a puppy greets you by jumping up you know he is pleased to see you and it is very difficult not to reward this behaviour by giving him attention.  Don’t.  If your puppy jumps up, turn away and ignore him.  Wait until he has calmed down then crouch down to make a fuss of him and if there is any risk he might jump at your face again, hook your finger in the back of his collar to prevent him.  When visitors come it is probably best to put him on the lead so that you have some control over his behaviour.   Ask your visitor not to make a fuss of your puppy until he is sitting quietly and the same when you meet someone in the park.  This is probably the hardest part of the exercise as humans are a notoriously harder to train than dogs!
