How can I stop my puppy biting?

puppybite.jpg

All puppies bite in play but some nip harder than others!  This is normal behaviour and exactly what they have been doing with their litter siblings before coming to live with you.  During play with littermates puppies develop muscle coordination and learn how to cope in social situations with other member of their species.  Learning to play with humans is a big learning curve but for the sake of children and elderly friends and relatives your puppy should be discouraged from biting. Encourage your puppy to bite or hold a toy, if he nips you say, ‘ouch’ stop the game, keep still and ignore him.  Eventually he will learn there is no reward with biting.  Sometimes puppies chase and nip ankles and lively children are often the target of this game; if that is the case, put him on a leash and hold him away from the person and only allow him closer when the only thing he attempts to bite is a toy.
