When animal lover Fiona McClenaghan, 44 moved to Scotland and discovered that the Scottish SPCA receives no government or lottery funding, she decided to raise money herself by embarking on a 1000 mile cycle challenge from Lands End to John O’Groat.

Fiona was brought up in a family devoted to rescuing animals and now has three dogs of her own, Mac, a Spanish galgo who was used for hunting, was abandoned and found his way into a Spanish rescue centre in Spain, Sophie and collie cross from Northern Ireland and Millie, an ex racing greyhound.

Over the past three months Fiona has managed to fit in an intense training schedule around her work and her commitment to her dogs.  She has been getting a good 35 mile cycle ride in most days and Elgin cycle club have supported her by mapping out some longer endurance routes.

Elaine Floyd, manager of Inverness Highlands and Islands Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre said:

"We're delighted Fiona has chosen to take part in the Lands End to John O'Groats challenge for us and the money raised will go a long way towards helping some of the abandoned and neglected animals we are caring for.

"We rely entirely on public donations so we wouldn't be able to continue our work rescuing and rehoming animals in need without the support of kind and generous people like Fiona."

With the help and support of friends, the local Air Training Corps and local residents Fiona is half way towards her fund raising target of £3000 but she still has a long way to go.

Fiona said, "I'd love people to get behind me and support the Scottish SPCA. Knowing that I've reached my fundraising goal will really spur me on to successfully complete the cycle challenge, and it will also make that glass of red wine at the finish taste even better."

Donations to Fiona's challenge, which takes place from 27 August to 8 September, can be made at
