Can humans catch warts from dogs?
No. Dog warts are caused by the papilloma virus but it is a strain that does not affect humans. Puppies that have canine papilloma virus infection tend to develop lesions on the mucous membrane of the mouth and occasionally on the eye. These are benign growths that resolve themselves within 1 to 5 months therefore it is best to leave them alone unless they are causing severe discomfort or interfering with eating.
Warts seen in older dogs are thought to be caused by the same virus but of a slightly different strain as the lesions are not so readily transmissible to other dogs. Again the warts are best left alone unless causing discomfort as they will resolve over time. Very rarely warts can transform into a malignant tumour so it is advised to keep an eye on the warts and monitor changes in size and appearance.
