Best in Show (2000) Film

An award winning film from the creators of 'This Is Spinal Tap'. Directed and co-written by Christopher Guest.
Review by Margaret Walton
The humour is very adult which surprised me especially as it got a PG rating. Having said that, it is all very tongue in cheek and would be even more funny if you watch it with lots of alcohol inside you and plenty to more to drink as make your way through it.
Basically, it is the American equivalent of Crufts. The story is about different groups of people, their show dogs and their journey to the 'Best in Show'. The dogs are wonderful and are obviously well trained for their appearance in the ring though that's it for their part.
After I found out it was actually a 'mocumentory' and all improvised I became more impressed with the whole film. It has lots of the usual actors in it who you will know from films like Home Alone and Beetlejuice. My overall impression was that it wasn't the best film I've ever seen and would think twice before recommending it to anyone, unless of course they are thinking of breeding dogs just to show in Crufts, and then I would say it is a must for a light hearted look at that sort of life.
The film does succeed in displaying the most wonderful characterisation of the different types of personalities who are drawn to keeping dogs for showing and I can only imagine whilst they are exaggerated they are never the less a true reflection of that community of dog lovers.
