Ayot St. Lawrence - The Brocket Arms

25 miles from London, tucked in the Hertfordshire countryside lies the Brocket Arms in the heart of the village of Ayot St Lawrence.  This delightful country inn was built in the 14th century and was originally the monastic quarters for the Norman Church until the Reformation.  The Brocket Arms has been tastefully refurbished in recent years but still retains the traditional features of its period, low ceilings, oak beams and huge inglenook fireplaces.

Ayot St Lawrence is one of the most picturesque villages in Hertfordshire and is steeped in history.  Locals will take great delight in regaling you with ghost stories and myths that abound in the area.  The village was home to George Bernard Shaw who lived there for 40 years until his death in 1950.  His house, Shaw’s Corner, is now owned by the National Trust and is open to visitors from March to November.  Ayot House, an attractive Georgian mansion, was once Britain’s only silk worm farm.

The inn has cosy bars serving real ales and an excellent restaurant specialising in seasonal, local produce.  Lunch is served every day from 12 noon to 2.20pm and evening meals between 7pm and 9pm daily (except Sunday).  Bar snacks are available lunchtimes and early evenings (except Sunday).  When the weather improves, there is a large well kept family garden to be enjoyed.

The accommodation was tastefully finished to a high standard in April 2009 and dogs are welcome in the three attractive courtyard rooms.

This is ideal for a romantic weekend break with your pooch and,if you are based in or around London, there is no exhausting travelling involved.  Close to Ayot St Lawrence is Hatfield House, where dogs can be walked on a lead in the grounds, and St Albans with its Abbey, parks and Roman Theatre.

As  Londoners’ we can also recommend the Brocket Arms as a great dog friendly day out for getting the city smoke out of your hair and enjoying some good country fare.
