Animals Act 1971
Under this Act a dog may be stopped and even shot without warning by a farmer if it is caught worrying livestock. Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 anyone in charge of a dog that allows it attack or chase livestock is liable for prosecution.
The keeper of the dog is not liable if the livestock is on land onto which they have strayed or where the owner had authorised its presence.
