Animal Welfare Act 2006
The Animal Welfare Act 2006 came into force in March of 2007. This act, brought in to repeal the Protection of Animals Act 1911 and Abandonment of Animals 1960, has made welfare legislation far more effective by increasing and introducing new penalties on acts of cruelty, neglect, mutilation, tail docking, dog fighting and giving pets as prizes. Most importantly a ‘Duty of Care’ for owners and keepers of all vertebrate animals has been introduced. This means that the carer of an animal must provide it with a suitable environment, a suitable diet, an ability to exhibit normal behaviour patterns, to be protected against suffering, pain, injury and disease and also, consideration must be given to its need to be housed with or apart from other animals.
