A cautionary tale

If the worst should happen.......

What should you do if your dog dies while you are away?

This is something none of us like to think about, but sadly it happened to my brother’s family dog, Tigger, when he and his wife were visiting their property in the Charente.  While they were busy unpacking their car, Tigger found some rat poison they had left in a small foil tray prior to leaving on their previous visit.  They realised what Tigger was eating almost as soon as it happened and rushed him to the local vet where he was treated immediately.  Under normal circumstances Tigger could have survived but my brother and his wife were unaware that he had a kidney condition (something that is not always evident until in its final stages) and three days later Tigger died.

Naturally his owners were inconsolable but they did have the sense to seek advice and were told to ask the French vet for a death certificate.  It was also recommended that they should inform the travel company, in this case Eurotunnel, before returning to England.  By taking these precautions, not only did the Eurotunnel refund them the cost of Tigger’s travel but also they were able to claim on their pet insurance.  A small compensation for the death of a much loved family pet but imagine the extra grief and anguish that could have been caused if they had not followed this advice.
